Volvo B4, B5, and B6 mild-hybrid engines provide multiple benefits
July 28 2022,
Volvo is rolling out mild-hybrid powertrains on all of its vehicles in 2023. The Swedish automaker already started rolling out B5 and B6 powertrains in 2022, namely on the 2022 Volvo XC60. Now, all Volvo vehicles will feature at a minimum a mild-hybrid engine. But what exactly is mild-hybrid Volvo technology and what are the benefits of the B4, B5, and B6 powertrains? That is what we look at here.
The Volvo B mild-hybrid engines have a 48-volt electrical system along with a 13-hp ISG. On paper, B4, B5, and B6 engines have less horsepower than their T4, T5, and T6 equivalents, but in reality, the ISG leads to improved performance.
The B5 engine delivers 247 hp compared to 250 hp in the previous T5 engine, but the extra 13 hp is available when you need more performance. The B6 engine as 295 hp and 310 pound-feet of torque plus the additional 13 hp. The end result is a quicker engine that is also a lot smoother.
There is a new shift-by-wire braking system that is used to regenerate energy and send it back to the battery so that it is available when needed. The ISG also starts up the vehicle which leads to considerable fuel consumption improvements. To sum it up, new Volvo B4, B5, and B6 engines deliver better performance, smoother overall behaviour, and improved efficiency. Give us a call today to learn more.
