2022 XC60 Recharge vs. BMW X3 PHEV vs. Q5 TFSI e : Choosing the Right PHEV

Luxury PHEVs are growing in popularity for many reasons. They offer all the luxuries, technologies and commodities as their all-gas counterparts, but they let drivers enjoy unparalleled efficiency with the possibility to drive in full electric mode without using a drop of gas.

However, not all PHEVs are created equal. Some sacrifice performance, some tend to skim on technologies and others are offered at stratospheric prices. The 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge doesn’t compromise and has received a series of enhancements for 2022.

Here, we compare the XC60 with the BMW X3 PHEV and Q5 TSFI e.

The Volvo XC60 Recharge wins the performance race

While luxury PHEV drivers enjoy efficiency, the last thing they want to compromise is performance. The 2022 Volvo XC60 is powered by the mighty T8 powertrain which uses a four-cylinder, 2.0 L turbocharged and supercharged engine mated to a powerful electric motor and a state-of-the-art battery. This unit outputs 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. The power is channelled to the four wheels using a precise 8-speed automatic transmission.

The BMW X3 PHEV uses a similar engine setup. However, the performance benefits are much lower when compared to the XC60 Recharge. With only 288 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, X3 PHEV drivers will be disappointed on their daily drives.

As for the Audi Q5 TFSI e, it also uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit paired with an electric motor. Although higher than the X3, the performance levels max out at 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The Q5 TFSI e uses a less precise 7-speed automatic transmission.

In terms of full-electric range, the XC60 is at the top of the charts with a full 50 kilometres. The Audi Q5 lets you travel only 37 kilometres on electricity and the X3 PHEV is dead last with 27 kilometres.

More technologies and features inside the 2022 XC60 Recharge

For 2022, the XC60 gets upgraded with a more intuitive Android-based interface, replacing the Sensus system. This new system comes with a voice assistant, unlimited personalization options, and best-in-class navigation via Google Maps and a series of in-car apps.

Upgrades have also been conducted to the radar, camera, and driver-assistance system sensors to make the XC60 a smarter rival in the segment.
