2022 Volvo XC40 vs. 2022 BMW X1: Scandinavian Efficiency Takes the Lead

Volvo’s SUV lineup is the most advanced and unique in the industry. Where major German automakers fail at giving their products style and substance, Volvo excels and creates unique, Scandinavian-style vehicles that are powerful, efficient and so technologically advanced that rivals can’t compete.

Here, we compare the 2022 Volvo XC40 with the 2022 BMW X1.

The 2022 Volvo XC40 has more powertrain options

With the Volvo XC40, you can get three different powertrains. The base engine is the T4 and it uses an efficient 2.0-litre turbocharged mill to output 187 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The second engine option is the T5, and this one pushes forward with 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

Both these engines are mated to Volvo’s advanced AWD system that surpasses the BMW xDrive system in terms of handling on dry roads, but also during the winter on slippery surfaces.

Buyers can also opt for the XC40 Recharged, which has a fully electric powertrain. Thanks to a high output battery and electric motors, this XC40 churns out 402 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque. It also lets you travel for 335 kilometres without having to recharge.

The BMW X1 only has one powertrain option. This 2.0-litre turbocharged engine delivers 228 horsepower. The fact that there is no other gas or electric variant for the BMW X1 is a serious disadvantage.

More style and technologies inside the 2022 Volvo XC40

Step inside the XC40 and you will immediately notice that it offers tremendous amounts of refinement along with the unique Scandinavian style that drivers love. On the other hand, the BMW X1 looks and feels more like the usual bland crossover with limited styling.

The XC40 also offers a bigger and more intuitive infotainment screen than the X1. This system carries more features and is much easier to use.

In terms of technologies, all XC40 models provide plenty of passive and active safety features, like Volvo’s Pilot Assist, which helps the stay in the lane using steering assistance and maintain an even speed, combined with a preselected time interval to the vehicle ahead. This technology is not available in the BMW X1.
