2021 Volvo XC60 vs. 2021 BMW X3: The XC60 Extends Comfort and Efficiency

A favourite of many, the XC60 offers the luxurious features and advanced technology you expect in a premium mid-size crossover, and more. Three powertrains offer a key range of power options that fulfill many family and personal needs. The XC60 also incorporates safety expertise earned from generations of experience.

To help illustrate how well it stands against the competition, we compare the XC60 to the 2021 BMW X3.

Enjoy more efficient powertrains with the 2021 Volvo XC60

The XC60 offers three powertrain options, beginning with the T5. Standard in the Momentum trim, it outputs 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque using a turbo 2.0L four-cylinder. XC60 trims with the T6 powertrain enjoy 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. However, the T8-equipped XC60 Recharge offers a premium hybrid system that generates 400 horsepower and outstanding efficiency.

The standard X3 includes a turbo 2.0-litre with virtually the same output as the XC60's base engine. The X3 M40i increases to 385 horsepower, but it doesn't quite catch the XC60 Recharge in power, torque, and efficiency.

The X3's xDrive30e hybrid model dives to 288 net horsepower, and Volvo's XC60 Recharge finishes ahead of it by 112 horsepower. The reduced power also comes at a cost to efficiency. The xDrive30e consumes fuel at a much faster rate with a city rating of 11.1 L/100 km, whereas the XC60 Recharge achieves a better efficiency of 9.1 L/100 km.

The X3 has M models on the menu, but these are only marginally more powerful and come with a hefty price tag.

The 2021 Volvo XC60 is designed for your family

The XC60 features a cabin that incorporates Scandinavian sensibility and comfort for everyone. The vehicle's focus on passenger volume results in much better measurements in the front and back. With 1,054 mm of generous legroom, it allows 30mm of reach than the X3. This difference becomes more significant in the rear seats where the XC60 has a 40 mm advantage.

The XC60 also features more shoulder room in both the front and rear seats and an edge in cargo volume behind the front seats. Even if you don't have a growing family, the XC60 is ready to accommodate other lifestyles.
